Ngintaka Rug
“Ngintaka - Perentie Lizard” by Mulykuya Ken
These amazing handmade wool area rugs by Better World Arts are the result of a collaboration between Australian indigenous people and craftsman from the remote Himalayan region of Kashmir. Focusing on fine art instead of predictable commercialised Aboriginal images, they harness powerful stories from the traditional artists of the APY Lands in the remote Northwest corner of South Australia. These area rugs are wool on one side and plain canvas on the back. Please note, this is not a thick rug, its is best laid over a rubber anti-slip mat or used as a wall hanging. The design for this area rug comes from an aboriginal painting by Kathy Maringka. Kathy’s painting is part of the recent exciting work emerging from the Katjiti Arts Centre. The style is unique to the Aboriginal women artists of the Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara Lands, in remote north-west South Australia. This design was inpired by the Perentie Lizard. Better World Arts recognizes that culture is strengthened when traditional skills and life styles are valued and supported. Its creator, Carolyn Wilson, aims to create innovative products which support local communities culturally and economically, and engage the global marketplace.
