The signature Vintage Kantha Armchair was developed by Karin Gardiner on a visit to India in 2008. Whilst sitting on the floor of a furniture factory, sifting through hundreds of recycled fabrics, she had one of those 'Light Bulb' moments which sparked a whole new trend.
Each vintage Kantha piece is covered by an original Indian 'Gudri' blanket. The Gudri is formed by hand stitching together 3-4 layers of recycled cotton saris, using a continuous linear 'Kantha' stitch. These colourful Gudri blankets were originally intended for practical use within the Indian home. However, with the growing appreciation of Indian textiles, Gudris are finding new lives as unique decorator items.
On her travels Karin also collects vintage textiles from other regions, such as original Ikat fabrics from Uzbekistan, Suzanis from Afghanistan, and Kimonos from Japan. The range evolves constantly through the year to incorporate these new finds.
Every Gudri is a genuine, one-of-a-kind, vintage textile. This means that no two armchairs are alike, and that small marks, stains, holes or patches will perhaps occur on most items.
