Ngintaka Wall Hanging
“Ngintaka - Perentie Lizard” by Mulykuya Ken
These amazing handmade wool wall hangings from Better World Arts are the result of a collaboration between Australian indigenous people and craftsman from the remote Himalayan region of Kashmir. Focusing on fine art instead of predictable commercialised Aboriginal images, they harness powerful images and stories from the traditional artists of the APY Lands in the remote Northwest corner of South Australia. This rug image comes from an original painting that is a part of a series Mulykuya Ken has been working on. She is a talented emerging artist and works at the Better World Arts Studios. The story is of the ngintaka (perentie lizard). The perentie is an important figure in creation stories, and is the totem of Mrs Ken's father - he was custodian of the Ngintaka Tjukurpa (dreaming story). She has traditional permission to paint these stories, and the perentie itself. This painting is a detailed look at the textured skin of the perentie. Better World Arts recognizes that culture is strengthened when traditional skills and life styles are valued and supported. Its creator, Carolyn Wilson, aims to create innovative products and business structures which support local communities culturally and economically, and engage the global marketplace. The aboriginal paintings, rugs and cushions are authentic and reflect the culture of the Indigenous people whose art she promotes. The designs are wool on one side and plain canvas on the back with a pocket at the top to slip a hanging rod through. Each wall hanging comes with an authentication certificate and artists profile.
