Milpatjunany Wall Hanging
“Milpatjunany – Drawing in the Sand” by Mantuwa Treacle of Kaltjiti Arts
These amazing handmade wool wall hangings from Better World Arts are the result of a collaboration between Australian indigenous people and craftsman from the remote Himalayan region of Kashmir. Focusing on fine art instead of predictable commercialised Aboriginal images, they harness powerful images and stories from the traditional artists of the APY Lands in the remote Northwest corner of South Australia. The image for this rug is taken from an original painting by Mantuwa Treacle. Mantuwa is influenced stylistically by Milpatjunany – drawing in the sand, which is a way of passing on traditional knowledge about law and culture as well as about country. Survival meant knowing and understanding every aspect of living off the land and in particular the food and water sources. Visual representation through sand drawings gave clarity to the stories through images. Better World Arts recognizes that culture is strengthened when traditional skills and life styles are valued and supported. Its creator, Carolyn Wilson, aims to create innovative products and business structures which support local communities culturally and economically, and engage the global marketplace. The aboriginal paintings, rugs and cushions are authentic and reflect the culture of the Indigenous people whose art she promotes. The designs are wool on one side and plain canvas on the back with a pocket at the top to slip a hanging rod through. Each wall hanging comes with an authentication certificate and artists profile.
