Garden Variety

A divinely inspired outdoor room by Roger Davies,  we could spend all afternoon here.  The design is uniquely modern and feels a bit decadent.  Why does this alfresco space stand out from the crowd?
 

• The most unique thing about this space is that there are no walls or roof...how original! The hedge acts like a wall to make the space feel private and the canopy of trees provides protection from the sun overhead.
• While you may feel you are communing with nature in this space...civilised life is not too far away .  The juxtaposition of the ultra modern fireplace in exposed concrete against the organic backdrop is brilliant.
• The concrete pad looks like an area rug sitting within the lawn.  Even outdoors areas benefit from the way rugs create intimacy and define meeting spaces.
• The colour palette is such a winner.  It is mostly black and white so as not to compete with the lush green and then they have just a few small pops of colour in strong primaries.
• Mismatching is a great idea if you know how.  Notice the one different accent cushion?  The ceramic drum tables are the same but in different colours.  Lesser designers would have matched...we say bravo.
• Symmetry – This is fantastic example of using mirror symmetry to achieve perfect balance.  Sofas that face each other are also more conducive to conversation than at right angles.
• How low can you go?  The low slung deep sofas and very low coffee table make the space feel less formal and like its made for relaxing with a cocktail. 
• Outdoor fireplaces...need we say more?  Good in summer, great in winter.  Every house should have one.
