Indiscreet

There is nothing nicer on a rainy day than snuggling up on the sofa with a bottomless teapot and an old movie, and they don’t always have to be black and white!  This movie still, from ‘Indiscreet’ with Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant always makes us want to rush out and redecorate, and it’s easy to see why.
 

• The glorious use of saturated blocks of colour is just inspired in this room, and quite simply done. The very clever use of coloured mats for the pictures is all it takes to make this room so memorable and special. The colours are carefully selected to harmonise with each other and the formal and balanced way they are hung prevents the end effect from being a mish-mash
• The colours of the pictures are picked up in the furnishings, with matching cushions, lampshades and upholstery fabric.
• The strong colours are anchored by the wonderful white wing chair, the white carpet and the use of black and dark wood which makes sure this is a grown up room, not reminiscent of a kids’ play room.
• The furnishings are elegantly grouped, but not formal or fussy. The huge round coffee table is not central to the room, the sofa does not face arm chairs opposite but an ottoman, the occasional chairs seem randomly placed and the divine use of built in seating nooks either side of the fireplace is just inspired.
• The beautiful fireplace and mantel with grand mirror over gives the room gravitas, and is a focal point for the room. We don’t all have these beautiful features in our house, but when they are there, they can be stylishly interpreted and not just taken for granted.
• Finally, there is no question that the addition of Ingrid Bergman to any living room adds grace, poise, style and drama. In the absence of Ingrid, channelling her will just have to do!
