Eclectic Essence

Style Counsel Eclectic Essence

Do you have a range of different items and styles but don’t know how to piece them together? Colour people, colour!

Have a look at all the blue you can see. There is such a variety of tone used throughout the room that ties it all in beautifully together – using blue and green in the artworks allows for an introduction of green elsewhere.

A neutral backdrop is just perfect to create harmonious flow of colour. You can swap and change accessories often and whenever you like, thus creating a whole new vibe to the room. Pink, anyone?

The white headboard is still a statement piece without taking over; adding studs generates interest to the eye yet still allows for beautiful patterned bed linen.

Want the look with Eco Chic? Why not try our gorgeous Matilda Headboard and combine it with a funky side table like the Ironside. Add a splash of colour with some Buttercup Art or a Bamileke headdress.

Peaceful Palette Pretzels
April 2013
country living pretzel

A very pleasant room, nothing overly remarkable but still an effortless pulling together of elements which taken separately would not immediately appear to work together. Look how nautical, ornithological, botanical and jungle references are thrown together with an oriental influenced lamp and deco style Pretzel chairs, yet the whole comes out as an ode to elegance!

Why? Well, it's down to the Timeless Trinity - colour, scale and texture.

A subdued palette draws the disparate parts together and quietly unites them, then is given life with colourful shots of orange.

The animal print on the ottoman and the bird print on the chairs are in small doses - an entire sofa in either of these would dominate the room and cause imbalance.

Natural rattan on the chairs and tray, fresh flowers in the fireplace, linen on the lampshade and a coral decorator piece add visual interest, bring the outdoors in and remind us of the best decorator of them all - mother nature - she never gets it wrong!

We'd love to help you recreate this room. Our Pretzel Armchairs can be upholstered in any fabric you like, as can our Lewis Ottoman. We have Rattan Trays just like this one. Try our Lexicon Art range for a similar wall display. The Lisbon table lamp has a textural aqua base and hessian shade perfect for this kind of look.

Kitchen Dining Combo
April 2013

style counsel kitchen dining combo

This space is a very interesting combination of minimalist modern, eclectic bohemian and colourful monotone!  A seemingly disparate selection is made to work quite effortlessly – but how?
  • Colour – the cabinets and floor are a very neutral tone which allows the colours in the room prominence.  Whilst striking, the colours are not strident and all share the same soft palette.  Finally, each block of colour in the room is echoed in the patterned floral of the sofa upholstery which brings the separate elements together.
  •  Levels – there are four distinct levels visible in this room (benchtop, table, seating, sofa) which could look either clinical or messy, but here the addition of large, curved pendant lights, dining benches with coloured seat cushions and the very unusual couch arrangement makes for a cohesive whole which invites us in.
  • Texture – we have timber laminate, leather, 2-pac, corduroy, flowers, fruit and floral upholstery all of which add interest and contrast.  Imagine how dull this space would be if everything was in shades of brown and the sofa matched the bench cushions which matched the pendants?!  Boring...
Texture, colour and variety bring warmth and interest to a space and make a home.  Eco Chic has some suggestions to get you started... Try our Atelier Bench or Loft Dining Bench for alternative kitchen / dining seating and we can make custom cushions for you.  Check out our Custom Pendants for a truly personal lighting interpretation.  If you’d like a very eclectic, personal sofa, we can upholster any of our sofas in your selection, just check out Custom Upholstery section.

serena and lily 3

It’s is always hard to create a space that will look good for years to come...how do you avoid trendiness without ending up with a room that looks boring and old fashioned?  We think Serena and Lily nailed it.  Let’s break down the elements of design.
  • Classic colour - there are not many colours that never really go out of style, but blue is one of them.  The mixture of navy with royal keeps it from feeling too matchy-matchy
  • Classic shapes - tthis style sofa with the rolled arms and a button ottoman are fantastic pieces...good to look at and comfy too.  A light coloured linen on the sofa is ALWAYS a winner.
  • Modern touches – the rug could be from 1985, but it works, and the mod sculptural side table keep this space very eclectic and now.
  • Contrast – don't be tempted by beige...contrast is the key to keeping it sharp and hip.  Look at that dark charcoal wall with the white curtains...will never date.
  • Great Art – cannot emphasize enough how some well selected pieces can lift a whole room and say “I'm sophisticated”.  Go for original art if possible.
To get the look with Eco Chic, check out our Lewis Ottoman available in any fabric.  We also have a great art section with originals and prints to add a splash of colour and sophistication.  Our Lily sofa is almost a perfect match to this one...try it in Linen Pebble.  We have also just added a fantastic collection of new chandeliers!

Breakfast Club

newsletter scando kitchen[1]

Sometimes it's nice just to look at a space that makes us feel happy. There's nothing overly designer about this luminous dining space, and the components are certainly not high end, but the whole just invites us to pull up a stool, put on the kettle (or get out the corkscrew!) and linger for a while. A clever achievement in what is actually quite a small space.
  • The mismatched and haphazard seating enhances the informal tone and certainly adds charm and colour.
  • White walls and floors - give it a go! It's not as scary as it sounds and white floors dramatically increase light in a room space. Make sure to anchor the overall whiteness with naturals and colour splashes otherwise it can all get a little 'hospital corners'.
  • Pendant lights over a dining table helps define a space, add workspace and meal time lighting of course but also direct our gaze upwards increasing the sense of loftiness in a room.
  • Don't be afraid to re-purpose and re-home. Try using garden chairs inside, a log basket for storage, a garden pot for utensils, potting trays for shelving and why not look out for some vintage crochet blankets or tea towels to make dining seat cushions.
  • Add the unexpected and give your space the edge. Here, a wall mounted deer head makes a talking point and adds an extra dimension.
Want to recreate? Eco Chic has some suggestions: check out our Hobart and Industrial Cage pendants for dining style; our Lightwood dining table would look fab in such a space; try the Roadie storage unit has this lived-in look; El Toro rattan bull's head is the eco way to add edge to your living quarters; we have some great Baskets to chose from; our vintage Mason Jars are the perfect accessory for this style of decorating and our Betty dining chairs will add a splash of red to your room.

Lust Have

style counsel lust have
What we wouldn’t do for a home like this...it manages to be all things good:  modern but warm, unique but not “try hard”, sophisticated but fun AND we could imagine actually living in this apace...it feels real.  Let‘s tick the boxes as to why it’s so great.
style counsel lust have dining

  • White plus timber – A classic combo, this is how it manages to be crisp but still inviting
  • Texture – notice the fabulous sculpture above the traditional fireplace...totally unexpected and cool.  Cracked timber table, sisal rug and aged leather complete the story
  • High Ceilings  - something this daring and strong would not work with low ceilings
  • Geometry – everything about this space seems to be about the lines and shapes: sculptural chairs and stools, round mirror, square windows.  The lines of the ceiling and ladder complete the drawing...a masterpiece!
Eco Chic can furnish a few goodies if this is the look you are going for.  Check out our Santa Barbara Coffee Table, Oxford Aged Leather Club Chairs and Lightwood Dining Table.  For the finishing touch we have lots of textured natural weave rugs like the Nest Hemp Rug and loads of accent cushions with tropical themes to select from.

WANT A FRESH LOOK THIS SUMMER?

WHY NOT STEP IT UP WITH WATERMELON HUES!

Who doesn’t love watermelon! Even if pink isn’t your favourite, this red/pink colour will add vibrancy to any area, especially with white as a backdrop, as shown in this picture from Home Beautiful.

·         Fresh, light colours go perfectly with ones of similar density. Notice how the green lends itself to the pink and watermelon scheme while also reinforcing the ‘outdoors’ space.

·         Try to keep in mind to incorporate most colours that the area already has. By choosing this colour scheme, the floor, which might have turned towards the brown side, has been lifted and given new life.

WANT THE LOOK WITH ECO CHIC? Try our gorgeous Bangalow lounge chairs which can be used in any fresh outdoor covered space. Add a few cushions from our Escapade outdoor range, a beautiful ice bucket like the Lodge or Thorn, and you will be sitting pretty too!

style counsel yellowandblue bedroom decorpad

Good Morning Sunshine!

Blue and yellow is certainly a very cheerful combination, but can be a bit kindergarten if the tones and textures are not quite right.  We love this grown up bedroom from Decorpad as it hits the mark without becoming too playful nor taking itself too seriously.

  • The tones of yellow and blue are sophisticated and edgy thus avoiding the primary school trap.  Solid blocks of acid yellow and ink blue work beautifully together and are used in moderation.
  • Crisp black and white – the timeless combination is made modern with the use of a modern geometric print for the upholstered headboard and set off by the vibrant yellow and profound blue.  Add block colour to black and white to bring it bang up to the moment.
  • Keep it simple – with scene stealing lamps such as these beauties and a statement piece bed head, nothing else is needed.  Clean, classic, contemporary yet comfortably inviting – all that’s needed for a stylish night’s sleep!

Like the look?  Eco Chic has some suggestions:  whilst not as zany as these lamps, the Quasar lamp packs a bright yellow punch; our Gracie upholstered headboard can be made in a black and white geometric fabric of your choice; try the Durante Comforter or a Bluebird Mohair Throw for a splash of blue on your bed.

Coming Up in 2013

Will ’13 bring terrible trends in décor, break new ground or will we have just more of the same?  Here’s what we’re predicting will be big or emerging in this new year, let us know if you like / agree!

Manly Swagger – we have seen a lot of fondant shades, delicate touches and feminine finishes over the last three years, so it’s not surprising the pendulum is swinging in favour of the men in our lives who probably prefer leather to lace.  Expect pin stripes on walls and on fabric, dark leather making a return, and a Gentlemen’s Club flavour emerging for lounge rooms and libraries.

Golden Sunshine – yellow and gold will be prominent tones, used especially for accents and accessories, sometimes even for large items such as sofas.  Gilding on wallpaper and for details on pictures and mirrors will be especially popular.

Feathered Friends – animals, birds and feathers will still feature prominently and we can’t believe how long the bird trend has lasted!  This year it’s hello to gaudy parrots and peacocks and goodbye to owls and ostriches. Feather details are tipped for the top and elephants forecast to be big!

Suzani Fabrics – we’ve always loved these and are delighted their time is now.

Hollywood Noir – luxe, opulence, over the top lavishness.  Pattern, padding, layers and colour but with decadent overtones – think Black Dahlia rather than Days of Wine and Roses.

Emerald Sighs

emerald green blog

All interior décor buffs will be aware that ‘Pantone’s Color of the Year’ is Emerald Green.  This year’s colour really seems to have captured the collective imagination of the creatively inclined and has really hit the mark.  We certainly like it much more than some of the previous year’s difficult or insipid offerings – naturally, as we’ve always admired emerald!

How easy is this colour to use in the home?  Not easy, but used judiciously, cleverly or sparingly it can truly sparkle.  Take these examples – emerald elevates the space without overpowering, but the trick is to use it with white and naturals and add shots of other colours to add to the overall jewel-like effect.

  • The first room can carry off such a confronting expanse of emerald because of the extra high ceilings and the clever additions of clashing colours, quirky artifacts and eclectic furnishings prevent the whole being too sombre and serious.
  • The crafty chevrons on the drawers are cool without being self conscious and the fun additions of the hat, vase and flowers throw in other colour references making for a vibrant vignette.
  • Emerald paired with royal blue, aqua and turquoise and off-set against bright white will always work well, especially for rooms wishing to present as fresh yet sophisticated.

Like some of these looks?  For paint, try Resene Moxie or Dulux Pharoah’s Gem.  We have a fuschia bamileke feather headdress and the Aloha chair is along the same lines.  The Esmeralda bed head comes in – you guessed it – emerald green, and check out our Boheme fabrics for some luscious patterns in emerald and a host of colours to mix and match.

Christmas-Bedroom-Christmas-Home-Decorating-2010[1]

Okay, we can’t help it, we’re getting rather festive here at Eco Chic, but as we are still in November, we don’t want to peak too soon!  That’s why we like the subtle Christmas wishes conveyed by this bedroom.
This room is not too over the top in its seasonal décor, but is certainly luxe enough for us to have high hopes for what might be left under the tree Christmas morning!

  • Especially captivating is the bed - who wouldn’t want to wake up in this lavish creation!  The decorative detail of the bedstead is allowed to shine against the pure white bed linen and complemented by the glorious Prussian blue velvet counterpane.  It’s a clever touch to add sumptuous dark blue on the bed as it saves the overall effect from being too dark and sombre and allows for the blue tone to be echoed in other furnishing items – most notably with the black desk and blue Perspex Eros chair.
  • The shot of shocking pink in the cute yet cool hot water bottle lifts the setting and adds depth and a focal point to the room, and we love the fact that it’s a hot water bottle – the good old fashioned eco way to keep warm!
  • Finally, how restrained and tasteful are these yuletide decorations?  The simple star hung over the bed, the bowl of baubles on the desk and fairy lights around the window add enough of a sense of anticipation to the room without going into garish plus the oh, so casual strand of perfectly placed tinsel over the end of the bed adds that touch of whimsy no Christmas should be without.

Santa take note – this bedroom is on our wish list and we’ve been ever so good this year!

Tales of the Unexpected

interior design blog 32

Sometimes small adjustments can make dramatic differences.  Take this mood board featuring – in theory – very classic items.  A Persian rug, a coffee table, a wing chair and cushion, a side table.  Close your eyes, picture these pieces and a very traditional scene could present itself.  Here, simply changing colours and shapes allows a fresh interpretation of the familiar.

  • Teal leather for the wing chair – unusual, lighter in look, perhaps more feminine than its classic tan leather counterpart.
  •  Faceted gunmetal ceramic side table – more modern than the obvious asian style ceramic stool choice.
  • Silver blue tones in the rug – selecting blues for an oriental rug rather than traditional reds takes this floor rug into the realms of contemporary glamour and gives it a summery lift.
  • Circular coffee table – round and with a marble top is much less predictable than a rectangular wooden coffee table and deftly injects a cool crispness into the grouping.

Feel like something cool, crisp yet classic?  Eco Chic can help.  We can upholster the Yarra armchair in teal leather; the Facet stool has a silvery faceted style; the slate Maroc rug has silver blue tones in an exotic pattern or search on line for Turkish rugs; the Palermo accent table comes with a white marble top and can be custom ordered round.

Bathing Beauty

style counsel sept
Dramatic and Daring
We are wallpaper fans at Eco Chic, as it’s a very effective way of transforming a room without structural changes. Just think of the dramatic results achieved by wallpapers offering faux brick finishes, trompe l'oeil, library shelves and scenic vistas.

Alternatively, more subtle changes can be brought about with an unusual wallpaper creatively used, as shown in this bathroom from House Beautiful.

Such a dominant wallpaper isn’t an obvious choice for a small space, but a golden rule of decorating is to use large scale features in small rooms as it opens them up and lends an air of grandeur. The flamboyant feather design of this paper is beautifully complemented by the dark tone of the feature mirror and flattered by the casually charming floral arrangement displayed in a mercury glass vessel.

The gold tap ware of the vanity adds a touch of luxe to the mainly mono colour scheme providing contrast as well as colour. And the attention to detail in the white hand napkin with co-ordinated motif provides that final finishing touch.

Why We Love Autumn!

Untitled3

STEP OUTSIDE THE DRAB GREYS AND BLACKS OF WINTER AND GET INTO THIS SEASONS MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.

Whether it be in your skirt, in your hotdog, or in your home, mustard is swoon-worthy. It gives yellow an edge that breathes new life, new possibilities and new combinations! Contrasting it with gorgeous hues of raspberry and watermelon, a bland space is instantly revitalised.

  • A feature wall such as this is great without any art or wall accessories. But make sure you liven up the ceiling with a funky light pendant.
  • Keeping the rest of the palette neutral, feel free to go a little wild with patterns and textures. See how the leopard print cushions blend beautifully with the zebra stripe mattress and cowhide rug. Creative, crafty and clever!

Want the look with Eco Chic? Why don't you try some feature cushions in mustard, such as the Jandals Yellow or the Poppy Cushion. Team it with a gorgeous sofa like the Coco, add a hint of watermelon with the Bamileke Painted Table and ta-dah! Just beautiful!

Best Exotic Indian Dining Room

6-Refurbished-Dining-Room-Chairs1

We love the film Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and we love this dining room, too!  The vibrancy of the colours and the individuality of interpretation are very eye catching – do you agree?
  • The yellow mirror frames and the red chair frames would normally be a match made at McDonalds, but here they work in tandem to give a fresh, bright tone to the room.
  • The delightful pendant light pulls the disparate elements in the room together, and anchors the theme.
  • The heaviness of the table is off-set by the crispness of the chairs, and we appreciate that the chair fabric is not ethnic in reference, as that would have been overkill.
  • The elephant art could have tipped the room over into kitsch, but the careful balance of the flowers on the console and the lightness of the dining setting keep it all in the realms of good taste.

So what do you think – love it or hate it?  Tastefully different or over the top? A tribute to India or a testimony to trashy?  We’d love to hear from you!

Oriental Persuasion

oriental 3 form luxury iHouse designs

Oriental is a style that can be beautiful if done right and this room uses slight hints throughout, resulting in a flow of these gorgeous eclectic pieces.

  • White couches are a perfect foil to colourful accents, such as this green coffee table trunk. The vintage style of the trunk adds so much character to the room, while its colour freshens up the space. What a perfect item!
  • Don’t be scared to mismatch chairs or mismatch styles. An accent chair is supposed to do just that – accent. Make sure the colours are in the right scheme - these ones are perfect as you can’t go past purple and green together!
  • Birdcages – the flavour of the year! In order for these to succeed, perhaps try a fresh way that’s not the norm – in this case they are grouped to add drama to the cupboards. Do you have birdcages? How do you use yours?

Want to re-create? Add some colour  with our gorgeous Erica Armchair. If you want to try the oriental twist, check out our Fiona Cupboard made from hand-carved bone panels. Stunning!

Mid Century Sophistication

 interior design blog march

Unusual, masculine and encompassing a natural and rustic style, this room looks lived in yet smart and casual at the same time.  So why is it that this room works so well?

  • Don’t be scared of leather. While an entire room in leather may be a bit much, a splash here and there adds a touch of luxe.
  • Nowhere to put floor to ceiling curtains? It doesn’t matter, do it anyway! We love how clever these curtains are, hanging them high has given the room a lofty feel, and keeping them minimalist in terms of tone and style adds sophistication.
  • Add some plants to your living area. Not only do they create carbon dioxide which is good for your health, but they brighten the space with their intense colour.
To get the look with Ecochic, try our Serengeti Weave Rug. For an eye-catching coffee table, you cant go wrong with the Carillo, which is Australian designed and made.

Perils of Purple

5349461985 746fdb391b

Purple tones can be tricky to get right, but the clever combinations and lush textures in this room work to provide an opulent sleeping haven, whilst the quirky additions give an air of relaxed chic – here’s why:

  • The feature wall– black keeps the room from looking too girly while the addition of the white mural adds life to the wall and softens all the rectangular shapes below.
  • Mixed textures always look stylish and avoid an over matched hotel room effect.  But don’t overdo it. Two or three, maybe four textures work, but five or more? Do not attempt!
  •  Embrace headboards. Different colours and materials not only add extra 'oomph' to the room, but are so comfy to lean against while you read! Used in the correct way, headboards can make an ordinary space extraordinary.
  • Add a dash of contrasting colour and don’t be afraid to make it bold – here the yellow trim on the bolster pillow echoes the yellow lacquer side table and lifts the purple tones.
  • Natural touches keep the room tasteful and avoid a ‘teen retreat’ effect.  The contrast stripe on the blanket picks up the linen lampshade and neutral toned headboard revealing sophisticated restraint at work – extra colour in these areas would have taken things over the top!
Add natural texture at the head of your bed, with our fabulous Matilda Headboard.  Or, we can custom make a headboard just like the one shown above, just drop us an e mail with your specifications and we will build your heart's desire to your own design. Crellini bedlinens are tastefully luxe and tone with most colour palettes.  The Coco cushion comes in a glorious purple velvet, and the Jericho table lamp would shine in such a setting.

Yawn or Yippee?

111208 2012 Color of the year
Pantone-colour-of-the-yearpantone colour of year 2012

If nothing else, the Pantone Colour of the Year is a good excuse to get passionate.  Love it or hate it, it’s a conversation starter and that’s always a good thing!

So what do we think about Tangerine Tango?  Love the name, very evocative, it got us quite excited. The actual tone of the colour seems more Coral Calypso to us than Tangerine Tango, and the fashion world is going for a stronger hue, but we much prefer this colour to the sappy pink offering from Pantone last year!

The zesty shades of orange are so user-friendly; less confrontational than full-on red, less girly than sugary pink, less whimsical than dizzy yellow, so it’s no wonder orange and its family is so well thought of.

We can’t quite think of a colour Tangerine doesn’t go with – seriously! Can you?  This makes it quite a contender in the style stakes.  A good example of this is the bedroom featured here. What other colour can you think of that works so easily with aqua, mustard, black and white and adds a zing of freshness into the bargain.

And, funnily enough, the pastel version of tangerine presented by Pantone here is growing on us, probably because the resurgence of pastels in the world of decor is starting to take hold on us, too!

So what do you think?  Tangerine Dream or Tangerine Terror?  Yawn or Yippee?

 Boho Chic

lonny 3

Picture from Lonny Magazine

Eclectic and Boho,  to be sure,  but also sophisticated,  We are intrigued by this space as there is more going on here than meets the eye.

  • At first glance I thought …oh the mismatched look, but actually there is a not of matching going on,  the 2 end chairs match but are in different colours, the 2 white chairs and 2 white vases.
  • The symmetrical layout of chairs and formal architecture with symmetrical windows,  adds a dash or formality to really casual furniture…it’s a nice contrast
  • Large scale prints like this butterfly should not be just used for large things like bedspreads or drapes.  They look really fresh and modern when put on a smaller chair where you just get bits of the print.
  • The high ceilings could make this table setting la bit lonely but the large over scaled pendant lights adds intimacy but it is semi transparent so not too heavy…perfect!
  • Don’t know about that red and blue chair skirt… a bit too country kitch?
To get the look with Eco Chic, start with a nice big casual ding table like our Ventura.  Mix in a few dining chairs in both timber and white.  Our Paula Dining Carvers can be done in any fabric so if butterflies aren’t your thing,  how about some oversized botanicals or geometrics?  Or a see through natural look check our Giselle pendant lights…hung in a cluster they look amazing!

Decadent Decor

interior design blog dom

If you walked through the front door to see this everyday your uber chic sense of style would certainly be caffirmed! This daring and inspired entrance is fun, playful and so very interesting. Pop the champagne because I’m already sold. So what makes it so hip?

  • First of all, the rug. Love the way it’s positioned off kilter and transitions two different floor materials...not to mention the print!
  • Play with shapes. Circles and squares were the cat’s meow in the 1920’s. Love that funky square divider which is strategically clashed with the circular mirror and very sculptural table lamp.
  • Better in black...these painted floorboards are the perfect foil to the white and primary colours.  This is a recipe hard to get wrong.
  • Keep it simple. Don’t overdo the accessories. You want the attention on the a few fabulous feature pieces.
  • Eclectic to the extreme!  Our favourite style when done right...it takes someone brave and talented to combine pieces from so many different eras.
Eco Chic has a few pieces that will help you on the road to this super cool look.  Check out our Black and White Chevron Cowhide Rug and out Martinique room screen which comes in white or colours.  As for accessories,  we have a gorgeous range of vases,  including the bright yellow Thorn Glass and some great Mirrors.

Wonderful in White

interior design blog 31

Contemporary & Farmhouse had a love child.... There are no bundles of hay or overly obvious country motifs, yet this room still gives me the feeling I’m miles from the city. The crisp white walls and furniture bounce light around the room and create a feeling of spaciousness...the ceiling helps!! Can I just say Ah-mazing! Now how do you create this look you say?

  • Dare to go industrial! But be careful not to take it too far. Stick to just a few statement pieces.
  • Try to find furnishings made from hand-worked metals like iron or  copper, worn timber or even add some rope to give that “rough around the edges” look.
  • Too much white is way too Psych Ward! In this room the fireplace does wonders to add that spark of colour. If that’s not possible just add flowers, a rug or ornaments with subtle colour.
  • Try wall panelling on all or just one wall, this texture will add interest and give the room an inviting country feel.
  • Straight clean lines give this room modern sophistication especially in the upholstered furniture. This simplicity offsets the detailed iron pieces nicely.
To get the look with Eco Chic, check out our Parker Sofa in white hemp.  We have a number of industrial style pendant lights to choose from and fantastic farmhouse style rustic dining tables to give that warm feeling.  If you are so lucky to have a fireplace...do top it off with a nice big round mirror!
